Another narrative of Tetsuo and Youth is the lyrics. Lupe speaks calmly and sympathetically on the best tracks on the record, without pointing fingers. His vocabulary is still sharp, but the MC softens it with perspective; his politics are still at play; he’s just stepped down from the soapbox. “Deliver” is about impoverished, segregated neighborhoods where residents can’t even get a pizza delivery—Lupe uses scraps of food as a symbol for salvation (“Can I get delivered from this sin? / Get a little slice of heaven, I can enter in again”), and thus points to the extremes of life in food deserts.
