Kendrick Lamar says on “Father Time” that when Drake and Kanye West settled their years-long feud, he was confused.
Kendrick Lamar’s fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, was released on Friday (May 13). The 18-track project, titled Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, is divided into two sections and features Ghostface Killah, Kodak Black, Summer Walker, Blxst, and Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, among others.
Some perceived the burying of the hatchet by Drake and Kanye West (now Ye) as the moment hell iced over. Others were baffled. Kendrick Lamar belongs to the latter group.
On the album track “Father Time,” featuring Sampha, the Los Angeles native examines himself and the long-ingrained “daddy issues” that have both propelled and kept him back:
“When Kanye got back with Drake, I was slightly confused
Guess I’m not mature as I think, got some healing to do”
Putting aside their differences culminated in the Amazon-streamed Free Larry Hoover Benefit Concert, which was put together in just 18 days. Gabe Fraboni, creator of PHNTM and Ye’s production lead for the event, disclosed to Complex in December that the evening’s spectacular effects were the “biggest unknown” in terms of preparing. A month previously, Kanye appeared to reveal that he and Drink Champs Kendrick and Drake were still feuding.
