Jack Harlow talks about Eminem’s influence on him and Grammy Nominations.
Jack Harlow, who’s currently one of the talked-about artists in the music scene and also earned a Grammy Nomination in ‘Best Rap Performance‘, recently sat down with GQ Magazine for the “Actually Me” episode. The Kentucky artist went undercover on Twitter, Instagram, and more to respond to the questions about him.
The Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 63rd Grammy Awards on Tuesday. For his tune “What’s Poppin,” off his Sweet Action EP, Atherton High School graduate Jack Harlow received a nomination in the Best Rap Performance category. Big Sean’s “Deep Reverence” starring Nipsey Hussle, DaBaby’s “Bop,” Lil Baby’s “The Bigger Picture,” Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage” featuring Beyoncé, and late Pop Smoke’s “Dior” are up against Jack Harlow. The Grammy Award winners will be announced at the official Grammy Awards ceremony on January 31, 2021. In the United States, the song was a huge smash, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rap celebrities such as DaBaby, Lil Wayne, and Tory Lanez appear on the remix version of the song.
One of the questions was, “What’s the story behind Jack Harlow? He Eminem-true to the culture or is he a vulture?”
“Hell of the question,” wrote Harlow. “True to the culture. I grew up listening to Eminem. I idolized Eminem, a big influence of mine while growing up. I mean he’s so dope. But also obviously… I remember when I was ten or eleven, I would wear like a toboggan, and hoodie, and headphones around my neck. Cause I wanted to feel like him. I definitely had an Eminem phase feeling like wow, just that Caucasian connection, you know. It’s strong.”
Jack Harlow had a moment to reflect on his fantastic year with Billboard on the red carpet Sunday night before killing his VMAs performance with Lil Nas X for their Billboard Hot 100 song “Industry Baby” (Sept. 12). Apart from kicking off his headline tour earlier this summer, Jack also secured a dream collaboration with one of his heroes, Eminem, in the spring.
Last spring, when Eminem and Cordae collaborated on the remix of “Killer,” Jack Harlow had the opportunity to work with him for the first time. Harlow has had a “special” discussion with the 8 Mile icon, despite the fact that the two have yet to meet in person. Jack Harlow told Billboard that he called Eminem after their “Killer” duet and that the Shady Records CEO told him he was a fan.
