Ice Cube names his top 15 rappers.
Ice Cube recently sat down with the Art of Dialogue for an interview, where the West Coast legend was asked to give his top 5 rappers. Ice Cube then went on to give his Top 15 rappers instead of 5, which included the likes of Chuck D, Ice-T, Eminem, Nas, Jay-Z, and more. But the one name that was missing in the list is 2Pac, and fans think that it is clearly intentional.
“Top 5, that’s hard man,” says Ice Cube. “I’ve got Top 15. I go back to guys who set the bar. One of my first greatest is Melle Mel. Another great emcee, I believe who taught everybody to bring more style to their rhymes, KRS-1. Another guy that is my favorite of all time, who introduced consciousness on another level into rap, Chuck D. Another one is another trendsetter, one of my OGs, who helped the west coast get on the map, that’s Ice-T.”
He continues, “I mean Snoop is one of my favorite rappers of all time, and so is Biggie, so is Jay Z, so is Nas. We got rappers like Ras Kass on the west coast, that’s crazy. Eminem, one of the best to ever touch the mic. Lil Wayne goddamn, Lil Wayne is nasty. Oh, Black Thought, monster. I’m gonna say, Slick Rick. I’m gonna leave the last one blank [Laughs].”
The question arose at the end of Ice Cube’s co-hosted podcast Million Dollaz Worth of Game, which he co-hosted over a month ago. Because this podcast “bridges the gap between social media and reality television,” it took a while for this episode to get hip-hop aficionados’ attention. And when it did, they discovered a pleasant surprise at the end of the program.
“Trying to Maintain,” a new single by Ice Cube, has been released. It’s his first new solo song since his 10th studio album, Everythang’s Corrupt, was released in 2018.
Despite the fact that this is his first solo song in a long time, more new collaboration music is on the way. Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Too $hort, and E-40 just formed Mt. Westmore, and they are set to release a new album soon.
Has Eminem ever collaborated with Ice Cube? Despite the fact that Eminem has worked on vinyl with a number of Up In Smoke Tour veterans, including Dr. Though Em mentioned Ice Cube in the concluding stanza of his favourite “Renegade,” he never collaborated with the NWA songwriter.
