Berner surpassed Dr. Dre on Hip-Hop’s wealthiest artists list.
The Forbes entertainment editor Zack O’Malley Greenburg has unveiled a list of the richest hip-hop artists, and JAY-Z continues to dominate with $1.5 billion at the top. A chunk of Hov’s fortune comes from his Armand de Brignac champagne and Roc Nation entertainment.
Sean Diddy Combs has now surpassed Ye on the list and also become the new hip-hop billionaire. Most of Diddy’s fortune comes from his Ciroc partnership with Diageo, which functions like an equity stake while creating cash flows for Diddy in the neighbourhood of $60 million annually. He also earns well from his other ventures, which include DeLeon tequila (he owns half) and Revolt (he’s the majority shareholder).
Due to the “White Lives Matter” t-shirt incident, Ye and Diddy really lashed back on Instagram earlier this month.
Kanye West recently lost his Billionaire status after ending the longtime collab with his Yeezy brand, and the rapper slipped to number three of the wealthiest rap artists in 2022. “I lost 2 billion dollars in one day and I’m still alive,” Ye wrote on his social media. “The money is not who I am. The people is who I am.” The Donda rapper is now third on the list with a $500 net worth.
Ye still has ownership of his master recordings and music label rights, as well as a 5% investment in Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS activewear brand. Although Adidas continues to be “the sole owner of all design rights to existing products as well previous new colorways under the partnership” he also still controls the Yeezy brand.
The surprising entry is rapper Berner, who takes the number four spot with $410 million after surpassing Dr. Dre. Most of Berner’s fortune comes from his Cookies cannabis empire, in which he sells 70 strains of weed and 2,000 different marijuana-related products across its 48 stores in seven countries and 20 U.S. states.
Dr. Dre is fifth on the list with a $400 million net worth. The producer/rapper’s worth once peaked at $800 million, but his value dropped down after he paid $70 million to create a music academy at the University of Southern California with Jimmy Iovine. He also gave around $100 to his ex-wife in the divorce settlement.
