Eve talks about her time in Aftermath with Dr. Dre.
Eve described being requested to fly out to LA to record a tape that finally caught Dre’s attention during her early years as a professional rapper. Eve eventually joined to Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment label and even worked in the studio with him, but their collaboration came to an end around the time Eminem signed with Aftermath in 1998.
“Ruff Ryders Chronicles” is a five-part document series that presents the history of the iconic Hip Hop label Ruff Ryders Entertainment, featured Eve on Episode 2. She talks about when Dr. Dre recognized her potential and signed her to the Aftermath. Eve claims that after signing Eminem in March 1998, Dr. Dre and his label Aftermath dismissed her. The rapper was speaking on The Ruff Ryders Chronicles, a new BET series that explores the history of the namesake record label and group.
“I went from being at home at my mom’s house to taking a flight to LA so that I Could record a demo to play for Dre. I will never forget after I recorded this demo, Dre heard it and was like, “Let’s make a deal.”
She even remembers being ignored by Dr. Dre after Eminem got signed. “I remember that when I was working with Dre, Eminem did get signed,” says Eve. “So I would literally show up to studio sessions that I wasn’t supposed to be at, where I knew Dre was going to be, and be like, “When am I recording? When are you going to put me on a song? What’s going on?’ I think he got sick of that. And I got dropped eight months later.”
Eve added: “It wasn’t too long after Eminem was signed that I got dropped from Aftermath, and I was devastated. I had to go back home, back to my mom’s house — I had to get back on the bus… it humbled me.”
