Elton John interviews Eminem on Rocket Hour Show.
Eminem recently made an appearance on the “Rocket Hour Show” of Elton John for a new interview that happened to center around Detroit’s Musical culture. “How are you gorgeous thing?” Elton greeted the Detroit rapper to start the show. “First of all congratulation on Kamikaze, which I really love. For me it’s just the grittiest thing you’ve done for a while, Just you know, being a big fan of your gritty stuff, I am very happy,” says Elton John.
They then went on to talks about controversial anti-Trump 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher. “They were worried about people in the audience with their cell phones,” Em says. “Then whatever I say gets out there in the wrong context or just pieces of it you know. So it kind of got switch at the last minute for them to come to Detroit. So I had to switch some things around.” Em also reveals why they chose to film it in a Detroit parking garage, “It was basically an homage to Public Enemy’s cover of ‘You’re Gonna Get Yours,’ which was a 12-inch single back in the day, But that was kind of what we were trying to playoff.”
Elton also talks about their iconic 2001 Grammy awards performance of ‘Stan’. “I’ve known you now since we did the Grammys together, an I remember coming down to the valley in L.A. to rehearse with you,” says Elton. “Obviously we did ‘Stan’ together. And when I saw you rehearsing, I got chills up my spine. I hadn’t seen anybody do that kind of thing to me since I saw Mick Jagger in the early days.”
Elton then went on to talks about his recent work. “I do like a little bit of feistiness. I’m very happy that you said you don’t get to use the word f****t anymore because I think you don’t need to,” says Elton, referring to Em’s comments in the interview with Sway Calloway. “You’re bigger than that. I’m glad you said that and cleared that up and that’s great kudos to you for that.”
Eminem then reveals his reaction to his last album Revival‘s tepid response. “I think I realized that what people probably have gotten accustomed to is me taking some risks,” says Em. “and I think that ‘Revival’ was probably just too tame of an album or too…I guess tame.” Elton John respond to this by stating “sometimes a non-success can spur you to do bigger things.”
In closing, they both reflect at their long careers in the music industry. “Listen, I’m blessed,” Em says. “I think that we both are in a sense of being able to have longevity you know. It only comes from hard work.” Then Elton says, “Hard work and passion too. If you lose your passion, you’re dead, you know?”
John also complimented Eminem for resolving to quit using homophobic language, which follows the uproar surrounding Em’s song “Fall.” In the song, he used a homophobic slur at Tyler, The Creator, for which he later apologized publically. John was recently recognized on Young Thug’s long-awaited remix of “Rocket Man (I Think It’ll Be a Long, Long Time),” retitled “High.”
