Eminem says most new rappers can’t reach the level of Lil Wayne or J. Cole.
Eminem surprised the Hip-Hop fans with the release of his brand new Side-B “Music To Be Murdered By” album, whose rumors have been floating around for a few days. In the song called “Favorite B*tch“, he teamed up with Ty Dolla Sign for the first time. In the track, Eminem raps about knowing some of the new era lyrical rappers, but most of them can’t reach the level of Lil Wayne or J. Cole. The lyrics quotes:
“As the era whens we came (Who?)
From Nas to Pac, Rock (Yeah), Eric B, and Kane (I know)
But I know a few from this era that are lyrically insane
And although most are never gonna hit the level Cole or Weezy at.”
In an interview with Sway in the Morning, Eminem said that Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole are keeping the lyrical rap alive. “I think that as artists and just as hip-hop connoisseurs to pay attention to what’s out,” said Eminem. “Pay attention to all the new sh*t that’s coming out because a lot of these kids coming up, they’ve studied the greats and you can tell and just watching them is incredible because you might get to push back on certain sides of the argument about hip-hop like ‘okay nobody’s really saying lyrics anymore and this’ but that’s bullsh*t because a lot of these kids coming up and I mention Kendrick Lamar and Cole a lot. I know they’re not kids coming up anymore but they came before or after us. They’ve studied all the greats and you can tell because it goes into their pen.”
The Detroit native has been the subject of intense speculation for more than two decades. His fiery, fast-paced poems have earned him a place among the greats in history books, yet such discourse is frequently debatable.
Eminem’s comment comes after the song “Zeus” on the deluxe edition of his current album takes aim at Snoop Dogg. Em is believed to have gone off on Snoop when the West Coast rapper revealed that Eminem isn’t among his top five all-time rappers. While the reason for Snoop’s remarks was never explained, Eminem has never backed down from his words.
Young M.A. is one of the most recent examples of the new era artists commended by Eminem. He said in a recent interview with Kxng Crooked that he would watch every video of her because he admired both her personality and her bars. [YBN] Cordae and DaBaby are two other names mentioned.
Em took a seat with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe to talk about hip-hop soon after the release of his Music to Be Murdered By – Side B (Deluxe Edition) album. Slim Shady discussed his thoughts on the top rappers of all time argument and the lists that have gone popular on social media throughout the years during the chat, which aired on Wednesday (Dec. 30). “Like, I don’t know if it’s fair to say that I don’t really get into those lists, like I don’t really, it doesn’t really matter to me,” Em shares at the 7:29-mark of the interview on YouTube. “I know for a fact how I feel. I rap to be the best rapper. But I’m not the only rapper who raps to be the best rapper. [Lil] Wayne, [J.] Cole, Kendrick [Lamar], you know what I’m saying, like Joyner Lucas. They rap to be the best rapper, and I feel like that’s, you know, when you push yourself like that, that’s what I feel like inspires greatness.”
