Drake Withdraws His Name From 2022 Grammy Nominations

Drake withdraws his two nominations from Grammy Awards.

The Recording Academy recently announced the nominees for their next year’s Grammy Awards event. The Hip-Hop nominations were topped by Doja Cat as she bagged spot in 8 categories, while artists like J. Cole, Drake, Kanye West, Lil Nas X earned multiple nominations. However, The Toronto Rap Star has now withdrawn his name from the two categories he was nominated in.

According to Variety, Drizzy and his management made the decision for the withdrawal, and the Grammys has accepted the request. The reason behind pulling off his name has not been revealed by Drake or his team. Drake’s latest album “Certified Lover Boy” was nominated for Best Rap Album, along with J. Cole, Nas, Tyle, The Creator and Kanye West. The hit single “Way 2 Sexy” with Future and Young Thug also received a nomination for Best Rap Performance.

The Recording Academy won’t replace Drake’s nomination from the given categories, as the voting period has already started. The last time Drake won the Grammy Award was in 2019 when he was honoured for his record-breaking single “God’s Plan”.

Drake has had a tumultuous history with the Grammys for a long time. When he accepted his 2019 prize for best rap song for “God’s Plan” – his first appearance at the ceremony since 2013 – he went into a speech that dubbed the honour “meaningless” before his microphone was turned off.

Last year, Grammy Awards received criticism from several artists for snubbing The Weeknd. Drake was also among the musicians who supported the “After Hours” singer. “I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what once was the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to the artists that exist now and the ones that come after,” wrote Drake in his IG story. “It’s like a relative you keep expecting to fix up but they just can’t change their ways. The other day I said @theweeknd was a lock for either album or song of the year along with countless other reasonable assumptions and it just never goes that way. This is a great time for somebody to start something new that we can build up over time and pass on to the generations to come.”
