Conway The Machine Had To Adjust With Kanye West's No Smoking & Drinking Rule During DONDA Sessions

Conway The Machine details Kanye West’s “No Smoking & Drinking” rule while working in the studio.

Conway The Machine is currently prepping the release of his upcoming Shady Records album “God Don’t Make Mistakes” which will feature his recently released single “Piano Love“. The Buffalo rapper sat down with Complex news where he speaks on various topics, including featuring on Kanye West’s latest album “DONDA“. They collaborated on the song called “Keep My Spirit Alive”, which also featured Westside Gunn.

He reveals that Kanye West’s team hit them up while they were doing a show in LA before the Pandemic last year. Kanye West invited the Griselda brothers to one of his Sunday Service, and then they connected at Wyoming. “Kanye, you know how he is. He’s just kind of spur of the moment, and he just got a feeling like ‘Yo, man. We should just go right now to Cabo and just work on some music’,” Conway reveals. “Obviously, me and Benny, we have some stipulations that prevented us from leaving the country so freely, so we ended up going to the ranch in Wyoming.”

Kanye West is notorious for his stringent studio regulations, and this was the case with Donda. Conway admitted that the no smoking, alcohol, or mobile phone prohibitions surprised him at first, but it wasn’t too difficult for him to relax and spit rhymes.

Speaking of Studio Sessions with Ye, Conway says, “At first it was kind of different for me because I didn’t really grow up in the church world. I’m used to studio sessions where it’s the homies around. It’s ni**as smoking, it’s ni**as drinking. You got ladies over here. You got ni**as smoking over there, shooting dice. And this one… ain’t no smoking, no drinking, no nothing. You can’t even have your f**king cell phone in the motherf**ker. It was kind of weird at first. Not weird, just different the first couple days. But, you know, it was nothing for me. At the end of the day, I was just happy and blessed to even be welcomed in that man’s atmosphere. I’m forever grateful and I got the homie back regardless for forever.”

Kanye West’s tight studio restrictions inside the makeshift studio he established in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta were revealed by Fivio Foreign. During an interview with the Los Angeles Leakers in September, Fivio said that the Chicago rap superstar demanded everyone wear Donda clothing and Adidas Yeezys. “When we went to Ye’s sh*t he made us all wear like [Yeezy],” Fivio said. “We had the vest on, he made us all wear Donda merch. I thought we were on Donda timing, I guess to get us in [that mindset].”
