Cam’ron Says Jay-Z’s Roots Picnic Freestyle Didn’t Live Up To Expectations.
Cam’ron has shared his thoughts on Jay-Z’s recent freestyle performance at the Roots Picnic, and it sounds like he wasn’t very impressed.
The legendary rapper discussed the performance during a recent episode of his show, where he talked about Jay-Z’s decision to address several people who have criticized him over the years. During the freestyle, many fans believed Jay took subtle shots at names like Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Dame Dash.
While some listeners praised the performance, Cam felt it didn’t hit the way people usually expect from Jay-Z. According to Cam, one surprising part was seeing Jay-Z respond at all. He explained that Jay has often been viewed as someone who stays above the drama and doesn’t usually respond to criticism.
“For him to even do that, he’s wild competitive, because people always think of and look at Jay-Z like, yo, your words can’t reach God. I’m too high in the sky to hear what ni–as is saying. Must’ve came down ‘cause you paying attention to what ni–as is saying,” he said.
Cam added that the freestyle showed that Jay is paying attention to the conversations happening around him, even if he doesn’t always address them publicly.
The Dipset rapper also brought Drake into the discussion. He believes Drake could use this moment to continue their ongoing tension if he chooses to. “Drake is competitive, too. He’s a competitive ni–a,” Cam explained. “By that freestyle not hitting the way his freestyles usually hit, this is an opportunity if Drake wants to take an opportunity and step up and be like, ‘Yo, that ain’t it, homeboy.’”

Cam also pointed to the long-running debate about chart success and numbers in hip-hop. He noted that Jay-Z has previously celebrated chart achievements and sales numbers throughout his career. “They was showing when Jay-Z was winning awards and he was saying, ‘Men lie, women lie, but numbers don’t,'” Cam recalled.
He then compared that mindset to Drizzy’s current dominance on the charts. Drake has been breaking records recently with his ICEMAN era, including major Billboard milestones and streaming records.
Cam questioned why some people now seem less interested in chart numbers when Drizzy is the one benefiting from them.
The comments have sparked more debate among hip-hop fans online. Some agree with Cam and believe Hov’s freestyle wasn’t one of his strongest performances. Others argue that the freestyle was more about making a statement than delivering a classic rap moment.
