Megan Thee Stallion was awarded Best Hip-Hop Female artist, while Latto grabs Best New Artist by beating Baby Keem, Benny The Butcher, Yung Bleu and others. The BET Her honour was given to legendary Mary J. Blige for “Good Morning Gorgeous“.
For the third consecutive year, a first-time category winner won the prize for best female R&B/pop artist. The past two years were won by Lizzo and H.E.R. Prior to it, the prize had been held by three women for 13 years running: Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, and Rihanna (2007-19).
Latto is the second female rapper to get the BET Award for the best new artist. 12 years ago, Nicki Minaj was the first. Minaj went on to get a Grammy nomination for best new artist, a feat Latto is sure to replicate when the nominees for the 65th Grammy Awards are released later this year.
