On this day in 2001, Eminem pleads guilty to a felony charge.
20 Years ago today, Eminem was charged with Pistol-whipping a man who was allegedly kissing his then-wife Kim Mathers outside a Warren, Michigan, bar on June 4, 2000. He pleads guilty to one of two felony charges but later avoided jail time when a judge sentences him to two years’ probation for carrying a concealed weapon.
Viviano informed the court that the gun was not loaded and was not pointed at anyone when he handed down the punishment. However, he cautioned Eminem against taking probation lightly. “I consider probation to be [very serious]. I don’t think it’s a lark or a slap on the wrist. I want you to pay very close attention to what is your responsibility and carry them out,” Viviano sternly told Eminem.
“I’m glad the judge and the courts treated me fair and as a human being,” Eminem told reporters. “I just want to get it behind me and get back to spending time with my little girl and making music.” He was also fined $2,500 and assessed $5,000 in court costs.
