Westside Gunn talks about Eminem, his new album, and more in a new interview.
One of the best in Hip-Hop right now, Griselda’s Westside Gunn sat down with “Bars On I-95” for a long one-hour interview. On the show, he talked about his latest album “Hitler Wears Hermes 8: Sincerely Adolf,” the eighth installment of his HWH project series.
The tape is short and to the point, with 13 tracks in 40 minutes and cameos by genuine stars like Lil Wayne and the resurrected Jadakiss. Along with those renowned names, Westside Gunn coexists with numerous characters from the Griselda world, like Benny The Butcher, Conway The Machine, Boldy James, Mach-Hommy, and Stove God Cooks.
The former Shady Records rapper was also asked about why he never did a joint with the legendary Eminem. Westside Gunn explained that it wasn’t really into his mind as his style doesn’t match with Eminem.
“When I was signed to Shady, I never even wanted to do an Eminem song. Because they don’t even mix,” says Westside Gunn. “I don’t do sh*t just because. ‘Oh, I’m with Shady, I gotta do a hundred Eminem songs,’ It wasn’t like that. It was just like, it was an opportunity of being over there with them guys. That’s all I really wanted. But I still wanted to have my sound. Now I’m looking at tryna do movies, I’m a creator. I’m a curator. I wanted to do that ‘Get Rich Or Die Tryin’’, ‘8 Mile’ sh*t. I wanted to do all of that sh*t.”
“That’s why I jumped and went that route. Because that’s what I wanted to do. Again it wasn’t happening as fast as I wanted to. I was already like lit doing what I was doing. But that’s why I’m still thankful. Shout out to Paul. We’re talking right now because I’m trying to get this weekly show on Shade45. I’m about to crush him with my own show on Shade45.”
Westside Gunn, who was signed to Shady Records back in 2017, left the label last over being disappointed with the way they handle their artists’ album promo run.
Shady Records can no longer claim to represent Westside Gunn. Westside confirmed what seemed to be the foregone conclusion — he did, in fact, split company with the Eminem-helmed imprint — when questioned about his current label position during a recent visit on The Joe Budden Podcast, he informed Budden, Mal, and Rory. “Um, I’m off Shady,” he says matter-of-factly. “I’m off Shady. I’m actually a free agent. It feels great. Who Made The Sunshine was it. I already spoke to Paul [Rosenberg]. Everything’s good. Like, everything’s signed, sealed and delivered I have my paperwork, like I’m off Shady. “I’m one of those type of dudes I’m not no public talkin’ n—a. That’s just how I move. It’s like sayin’ me and Benny or me and Conway or Conway and Benny or whoever, we might have a disagreement, but the world will never know. We still gonna be brothers and cousins. It’s the same way even with business, because at the end of the day, this a big world. Even if somebody else is a s–ka, I’m never gonna play that s–ka role.”
