JAY-Z’s interview with David Letterman.
JAY Z made an appearance on David Letterman’s new Netflix series ‘My Next Guest Needs No Introduction‘ which kicked off back in January. On the show, JAY-Z talks about marital issues, selling crack as a 16-year-old, President Trump, criminal justice reform, usage of the M-word, relationship with Kanye West, and much more.
Since Beyonce’s 2016 album Lemonade, which dealt frankly with her husband’s connection with a woman she given the nickname “Becky with the nice hair,” Jay-Z has spoken publicly about prior adultery against her. Jay-Z, for his part, acknowledged his adultery in his album 4:44, released in 2017.
Letterman makes no pretence of knowing anything about hip-hop. At one point, he asks Jay-Z, “What is the flow?” The rapper is kind enough to clarify a few things about good rappers. “You can have a great voice, and you can almost say anything,” Jay-Z notes. “I think Snoop Dogg has a great voice. He can say, ‘One, two, three and to the four,’ and it’s like, ‘Oh my God!’ It just sounds really good. Or you can be someone like Eminem and have amazing cadence. The syncopation [starts rapping “The Way I Am”]: ‘I sit back with with this pack of Zig-Zag’s and this bag. It becomes percussion inside the music.’ There are multiple ways to be really good. And some people just have it all.”
