Grandmaster Flash admires Drake’s different styles of music.
Drake’s place in hip-hop is a topic of discussion following Yasiin Bey’s recent remarks, and now Grandmaster Flash also weigh in on the debate and shows his admiration for the Toronto rap star.
Flash had a conversation with HipHopDX at the red carpet of Grammy Awards 2024 the other day, and was asked about Drake’s place in the culture. “What I admire about Drake is he’ll rap on all different styles of beats,” he said. “And back in the day, when I was DJing and cutting and a rapper was in front of me, he was rapping on all the beats I played. Sometimes, the beat was jazz, sometimes it was pop, sometimes it was rock, sometimes it was blues, sometimes it was R&B, sometimes it was disco.”
He continued, “So I think the kaleidoscope of music that he’s doing… his style… is absolutely excellent. This is why he’s so big…. Because he’s not just staying on one particular style of beat, he’s rhyming on everything and that’s dope.”
Just recently, Mos Def called Drake’s music ‘pop’. “Drake is pop to me,” he said. “In the sense like, if I was in Target in Houston and I heard a Drake song, it feels like a lot of his music is compatible with shopping. Or shopping with an edge, in certain instances.”
He then explained how Drake’s music is good for buying things at a mall, and then stated that the Toronto rap star’s music is “likable.” He then asks “what happens when this thing collapses? What happens when the columns start buckling? Are we not in some early stage of that at this present hour? Are we seeing the collapse of an empire?”
