Dr. Dre talks about NWA music in an interview with Kevin Hart.
Dr. Dre recently sat down with Kevin Hart for a conversation on his show Hart To Heart on Peacock. Among other things in the interview, the legendary producer talked about his rap group NWA and never liked their music being called gangsta rap in the 90s.
“By the way, I never liked it being called that, ‘gangsta rap,’” Dr. Dre admitted. “That’s never what we went in to do. We were just making hardcore Hip Hop. That’s all it is. I don’t know why it got that title, or who gave it that title. I don’t know who the f–k that was but, it wasn’t us.”
Kevin Hart asked why they didn’t correct everybody about their music. “We just embraced it and let it go, but that’s not what we decided to do,” Dre responds. “That’s not what we called. We [were] just doing Hip Hop. Hardcore Hip Hop.”

Dr. Dre continued and revealed why he left the group to go focus on solo career. “The difference there was money and business got involved, and it separated the friendship,” he said. “I had to separate myself from Eazy-E because he decided to take a different route. Ice Cube had already left, so I’m out here on my own. I have absolutely no idea what the f–k I’m gonna do, I just know I have this talent and I’ve been developing these skills with mixing in the whole s–t.”
“Close friend of mine, we call him DOC, talked me into doing The Chronic album. It was not my decision. I was talked in to do that. And I just went in there and went for it because I felt like at that time it was life or death situation. This record is gonna determine whether I’m gonna stay in the studio or not. It’s really tough to find that kind of ambition and energy today.”
