Birdman was once irritated by Lil Wayne always sounding like JAY-Z.
Lil Wayne’s classic sixth studio album “Tha Carter III” turned 15 recently, and the rapper sat down with Rolling Stone for a new interview to reflect on his career. During the conversation, Tunechi was asked about the rappers that he has in his playlist, to which he replied that “no one”. The rapper then revealed that having favorite rappers would eventually make him sound like that, which once happened to him.
“When it comes to rap, I don’t listen to no one,” he said. “I just don’t have time to, because I’m trying to get better every day. I tell my own artist that, too. When you find a favorite artist, you’re going to start sounding like them.”
He continued: “It took Birdman and them to pull my a*s aside and be like, ‘Bro, I’m tired of every song you doing sounding like damn JAY-Z. You’re not JAY-Z.’”
In the interview, the rapper was also asked about an artist that he would go against in a Verzuz. “I was interested in Mixtape Weezy going against Lil Wayne,” he said.” “That would have been crazy… What other artists you think? There ain’t no other artist that can stand on the stage next to me, bro. I’m sorry.”

Lil Wayne has always admired Hov, and in a previous interview he declared him the greatest rapper of all time. “I would ask forgiveness because I didn’t pay attention to the question,” he said first after naming Biggie. “I’ll take that back. The greatest rapper of all time is Shawn ‘JAY-Z’ Carter,” he then declared. “That thing in rap, that only thing that only we know in rap, he has that. He’s the Tom Brady of that,” he added.
