Baby Keem talks about a possible joint project with Kendrick Lamar.
Baby Keem is one of the first time nominees at the 64th annual Grammy awards, which is all set to take place next month at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 3, 2022. Keem’s single “Family Ties“, which is a collaboration with his cousin Kendrick Lamar, is nominated for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance, and he also received a nod at Best New Artist.
The 21-year-old now sat down with the Recording Academy to talk about his Grammy nominations. He was asked about his two collaborations with Kendrick Lamar on his latest album “The Melodic Blue“, and if we can expect a joint album from the two in future.
“That’s a good question,” he said. “It’s like it’s 50-50. It could happen and it couldn’t, I don’t know. It just really depends on a lot of factors that I don’t have control over. So, it’s just what the world wants. The world wants it, then it can have it.”
The pgLang affiliates collaborated on compositions for Keem’s first album The Melodic Blue, including “Range Brothers” and “Family Ties,” which received Grammy nominations for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. Keem was also nominated for Best New Artist as well as Album of the Year for his work on Kanye West’s DONDA.
And if Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem collaborate on a collaborative album, it won’t be released until Kendrick publishes his impending fifth album. The unnamed project will be his final with Top Dawg Entertainment, with whom he has been contracted since 2004. Few information about the project have been revealed, but it appears like it will be released just in the middle of the summer, since Kendrick is due to headline Glastonbury, Miami’s Rolling Loud Festival, and Italy’s Ippodromo SNAI San Siro in the following months.
“I find myself going back to a lot of old music,” he said on the projects he’s bumping to recently. “A lot of old Kanye and Outkast, obviously. But those are just songs — album-wise, I really go back and dig. Like I said before, Frank. Even my cousin’s old albums. I think it’s important to have your own individuality, but also be able to reference art from the past.”
Additionally, Baby Keem’s featured/co-written Kanye West’s track “Praise God” on “DONDA” scored him an Album Of The Year nomination.
