SZA drops debut album “CTRL” feat Travis Scott, Kendric Lamar & others.
TDE’s SZA returns with new material as she finally releases her debut album titled “CTRL“. The project contains 14 records with guest appearances from Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, James Fauntleroy, Isaiah Rashad, and more.
The 14-track collection also includes her previously released songs “Drew Barrymore,” “Love Galore” (featuring La Flame), and “Broken Clocks.” Ctrl begins and ends with SZA’s mother’s voice, providing a structure that allows her to speak freely to herself.
“My mom has spent her whole life living in openness and acceptance and I really never understood,” she explains. “When black mothers advise black daughters, there is a unique type of generational heritage. It’s a subject to which Beyoncé and Solange have returned time and time again, with snatches of their talks with their mother appearing in their music. Ctrl makes you feel as though you’re floating in a dream. Her silvery voice, electronic production, and an unapologetic transparency about her stage in life — she’s a 26-year-old woman attempting to manage relationships and honesty with herself — (There are also phone chats with her mother and grandmother utilized as interludes throughout the album.)”
Ctrl opened at number three on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States, selling 60,000 album-equivalent units (including 20,000 copies as pure album sales) in its first week. This was SZA’s first top-ten debut in the United States. That week, the album’s tracks received 49.52 million streams. The album ascended to number one on the charts in its second week, selling an extra 130,000 sales.
