Mass Appeal and DJ Premier shares “Hip Hop 50, Vol 1” project.
Mass Appeal Records is celebrating 50 years of Hip Hop with their “Hip Hop 50: The Soundtrack”, and they kicked off the campaign with a new EP called “Hip Hop 50, Vol 1” with production from DJ Premier.
The short project contains 5 tracks, with assistance from Joey Badass on “Lettin Off Steam”, Remy Ma & Rapsody on “Remy Rap”, Nas on “Beat Breaks”, Run The Jewels on “Terrible 2’s”, and Slick Rick, Lil Wayne on “The Root Of All”.

“When Nas says, ‘Hey, man, I want you to be a part of something,’ obviously you don’t really want to say no,” he said. “In my whole career, I’ve never done an EP. And then Nas said, ‘You get a record from me.’ …. The ‘Theme From the Planets’ is one of my favorites out of all the ultimate breaks and beats and that’s the reason why I shout it out. When I told him, ‘Let me do a quick chop of it on my Serato’ just so I could just figure out an idea of reworking that song, he fell in love with it right off rip. He said it reminded him of the park jams.”
“I will always seize the moment of being unique when it comes to releasing music” Premier said in a statement. “To be a part of Hip Hop 50 is an additional blessing to preserving the culture.”
DJ Premier, one-half of the influential NY rap group Gang Starr and one of the genre’s most prolific and influential beatmakers since 1991, is the first producer to release music. The legendary Slick Rick, the brazen convention-bashing combo Run The Jewels, Remy Ma, and current music faves like Joey Badass and Rapsody all make cameos on his contribution to Hip Hop 50: The Soundtrack. This is their first song together in almost 15 years.
